Use the Manual Entry Buy choice under the 'GainsTracker -> Record Trades' menu item
to record baseline buy trades for those holdings not sold last tax year.
Most brokers do not provide the ability to import starting positions, they simply provide your
trade data. So you'll need to determine which holdings were not sold last tax year.
If you don't record these 'baseline' buy trades, you will receive 'Sell can not be processed' errors
when trying to record your current tax year transactions.
More About Baselining . . .
If you have older holdings which were purchased prior to the
transactions your brokerage has made available for downloading, or if you
transferred a holding into your brokerage account, you must 'baseline'
GainsKeeper with these starting buy trades before importing subsequent trades.
For example, if you carried holdings from tax year 2003 into 2004 (that is,
you bought something in 2003 or prior, and didn't sell it until 2004), you must
manually record this buy in GainsKeeper BEFORE importing your subsequent 2004 trades.
If you closed/sold all holdings by the end of 2003 and you didn't
transfer holdings into your brokerage account, then you won't have starting buys to baseline .
In this case, simply import your trades with a start date equal to the 1st of the tax year -- 1/1/2004 in the above example.
