Benefit from GainsKeeper Daily
Are you using GainsKeeper everyday? GainsTracker and the Schedule D report are just the tip of the iceberg. By using GainsAdvisor on a regular basis, you'll always know your correct gains and losses and we offer customized 'Sell Grades' for each of your current positions. For tax-smart trading, sell your highest sell grades first. Also use GainsAdvisor to simulate selling and see the after tax impact on your portfolio. GainsAdvisor should be used to proactively offset your gains with losses. The trick is to minimize the amount you owe the tax man at the end of the year.
To prevent wash sales (which have the effect of disallowing losses) use the 'Past 31-day' Date Range realized view in your portfolio. If you see a stock in this view that was sold for a loss, this indicates that if you buy it back today, it will trigger a wash sale. Conversely, if you sold a stock for a loss this year and it is not displayed in the 'Realized View - Past 31-days', then it is safe to re-purchase the stock without triggering a wash sale.
If you are thinking of buying or selling a stock and want to know if it will create a wash sale, use the What-if Tool on the GainsAdvisor tab. This tool enables you to simulate the trade and see the resulting proceeds/cost, gain/loss characterization, and whether it will create a wash sale.
Enlarge your browser/window by clicking the maximize button in the upper right-hand corner of your browser. This will allow you to see GainsKeeper's View Accounts scroll bar on the far right.
You can use GainsKeeper's Watch List tab to record securities that you are interested in tracking, but don't own. Of course, you can also use the Watch List to track your actual GainsKeeper portfolio by clicking the Add All Symbols button to copy all your holdings to the watch list.
You can also access the Stock Screener from the Watch List page. This tool enables you to filter stocks based on certain parameters that you define. By using this tool, you can specify criteria that you can quickly compare stocks against to see if they meet your requirements.
Use the Tax Center menu items for easy completion of your Schedule D. GainsKeeper's PDF formatted Reports allow users with large portfolios to create their Capital Gain/Loss Reports in seconds. For accurate printing, look for the PDF format checkbox in the Reports menu item.
