Considerations
For any positions acquired prior to 1/1/1999, enter them using the Adjusted Lot action. This enables you to baseline a position as of a specific point in time, e.g. 12/31/1998. You should enter your original purchase date, total cost and share amount as of the chosen 'baseline date' - 12/31/1998 in this example. GainsKeeper will not adjust for corporate actions prior to 1/1/1999, so you need to enter the share amount and cost basis including any changes due to corporate actions prior to your chosen 'baseline date'. In addition, adjust your shares and cost for sells (or closing transactions) that impacted the cost basis and shares before the selected 'baseline date'.
